More than 100 faculty, counselors, student support specialist, employer partners, and other stakeholders from across the country attended the NSF INCLUDES Alliance STEM Core Expansion National Convening. The convening, held at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in Menlo Park, CA (March 8, 2019), focused on strengthening STEM Core pathways to the tech economy.

James Campos, director of the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity at the U.S. Department of Energy, delivered the keynote address. Campos reiterated the Department’s commitment to building a diverse community college STEM pipeline for the national laboratories.

Employer partners provided information about middle-skill technical jobs available for community college graduates at their companies, which include Northrop Grumman, Caltrans, and the national laboratories. In addition, Rob Sentz, chief innovation officer at EMSI, emphasized the need for colleges to respond quickly to workforce demands in STEM fields; and Jo Boaler, professor of Mathematics Education at Stanford University, shared her ideas about mathematical mindsets and innovative teaching.
