Celebrating the Strength of Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) and Rising HSIs in Support of Latino

APLU’s 2022 Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration is bringing together leaders in the HSI community to engage in dialogue to highlight the strength of HSIs and rising HSIs in supporting Latino students. The conversation will include topics such as: leveraging funding and resources for current and future Latino students, defining student success to be more inclusive of graduate Latino students, and exploring the role of partners in accelerating access, support and change for Latino students.

Dr. Javier Reyes
Interim Chancellor @University of Illinois Chicago
Dr. Javier Reyes was appointed as interim chancellor at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), July 1, 2022. In this role, Dr. Reyes oversees Chicago’s largest and only public Carnegie Research 1 university with 16 top-ranked colleges and an academic health enterprise, the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System (UI Health). Interim Chancellor Reyes is committed to expanding upon UIC’s inclusive campus culture, pioneering spirit, and realizing the vision to transform the world through eliminating disparities in economic opportunities, health and education. Before being appointed Interim Chancellor, Dr. Reyes became UIC’s Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs in August of 2021. During his time as Provost, he initiated a massive overhaul of UIC’s budget model while also igniting a restructuring of teaching innovation environments to position UIC for success amidst a new era of innovative and accessible education.
Dr. Mary Ann Villarreal
Inaugural Vice President @University of Utah
Dr. Mary Ann Villarreal is fueled by an unwavering commitment to ensure the doors to receiving a degree remain open and the table is set for everyone to participate. As the inaugural vice president for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the University of Utah, she provides leadership and strategic oversight of diversity and inclusion initiatives across the University’s academic and health sciences campuses. This opportunity unites her extensive experience in higher education and her passion for social justice in leading the University on its journey to becoming an anti-racist community. Since her arrival in 2019, Villarreal has been steadfast in growing the EDI division to meet the needs of the University through innovative and impactful programs. She quickly established One U Thriving as a platform that unites the division’s work across the campus and the EDI Strategy Council that will ensure alignment with the University’s strategic plan.
Dr. Ann Quiroz Gates
Senior Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs @University of Texas at El Paso
Dr. Ann Quiroz Gates is the Senior Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs at the University of Texas at El Paso, where she holds the AT&T Distinguished Professorship. Dr. Gates served as the Chair of the Computer Science Department (2005-2008 and 2012-2020) and Associate VP of Research and Sponsored Projects (2008-2012). Gates is the Executive Director of the Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CAHSI), one of NSF’s National INCLUDES Alliances that promotes the importance of inclusion and equity in advancing innovation and discovery. She also directs the NSF-funded CyberShARE Center of Excellence that advances interdisciplinary education and research. Gates serves on the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) Advisory Committee on Faculty Affairs (2020-2023) and the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s Round Table on Systemic Change in Undergraduate Education in STEM (2017-2023).

Director of the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities @APLU
Andréa Rodriguez serves as Director of the Office of Urban Initiatives. Andréa focuses on advancing student access, success, and workforce efforts through collaborative university projects. She leads cross-institutional initiatives alongside mid- and high-level university leaders, learners, and community members. In addition, Andréa leads the Collaborative Opportunity Grant, funded through the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and the Frontier Set initiative, a major Bill & Melinda Gates grant. Andréa earned her B.S in English Literature and her M.A. in Liberal Studies from The College at Brockport, SUNY. She later pursued a Master of Education in Higher Education Administration focused on Student Affairs from George Washington University. She earned an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Management from Drexel University, focusing on Education Policy. Andréa is the daughter of immigrant parents and a first-generation high school graduate.
