Sept 21: Book Discussion on Equity in Science

When:  Sep 21, 2020 from 12:00 PM to 01:00 PM (PT)
Associated with  NSF INCLUDES National Network
Join us on Monday, September 21, at 12 PM (PT) as Julie R. Posselt discusses her new book Equity in Science: Representation, Culture, and the Dynamics of Change in Graduate Education. She’ll be in conversation with Gibor Basri (UC Berkeley) and Natasha Warikoo (Tufts University).

In Equity in Science, Julie R. Posselt examines existing equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts across astronomy, physics, chemistry, geology, and psychology. These ethnographic case studies reveal the subtle ways that exclusion and power operate in scientific organizations and, sometimes, within change efforts themselves. Posselt argues that accelerating the movement for inclusion in science requires more effective collaboration across boundaries that typically separate people and scholars—across the social and natural sciences, across the faculty-student-administrator roles, and across race, gender, and other social identities. Ultimately this book is a call for academia to place equal value on expertise, and on those who do the work of cultural translation.

Julie R. Posselt is Associate Professor of Higher Education at the University of Southern California.

Gibor Basri received a B.Sc. in Physics from Stanford University and Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He joined the faculty of the UC Berkeley Astronomy Department in 1982 and became a full professor in 1994. He studies star formation and stellar magnetic activity, and was a discoverer of and expert on brown dwarf stars. A user of large telescopes, he was also a Co-Investigator on NASA’s Kepler exoplanet mission. His over 200 papers have more than 20,000 citations. His extensive work on diversifying STEM and the academy led to his becoming the campus’s founding Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion from 2007-2015. Though officially retired, he is still very active in faculty, research, and DEI activities.

Natasha Warikoo is Professor of Sociology at Tufts University. Her most recent book, The Diversity Bargain: And Other Dilemmas of Race, Admissions, and Meritocracy at Elite Universities (University of Chicago Press, 2016), won awards in the Sociology of Race and Ethnicity from the American Sociological Association and the Society for the Study of Social Problems, and from the American Educational Research Association. In 2017 Warikoo received a Guggenheim Fellowship to study racial change in suburban America. This project will culminate in a book titled The Rules of the Game: Asian Americans, Whites, and the Quest for Excellence in Suburban America (University of Chicago Press). Warikoo earned her BSc/BA in mathematics and philosophy at Brown University, and her PhD in sociology at Harvard University.
