First Place: Fort Lewis College, CO
0
Recommend
Fort Lewis College created three systemic efforts to provide pathways to success for underserved students: 1) a First-Year Launch course acclimating students to the college experience, 2) foundational mathematics support via a new summer bridge program and a new
cohorted
mentorship group, and 3) wrap-around retention tutoring and coaching provided by a new Academic Hub. These programs address college readiness in first-year students from an academic and social point of view. This project leverages the expertise of graduate student teaching assistants and is designed to be a model that is portable to other universities. The introductory physics lab is a unique space with tremendous potential to substantially improve the experiences and opportunities of STEM students, and especially those from historically marginalized groups, who would otherwise be negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
