The pandemic led to increased isolation and decreased access to education and support that were acknowledged as significant challenges in the 2021 Montgomery College Cultural Diversity Report and were the focus of this competition entry. We addressed our sustained attention to and efforts to resolve the inequities that arose from these conditions. Montgomery College provides several programs that promoted peer-to-peer connections for students to reduce student isolation and increase access. One program started during the pandemic is the Social Justice Inclusive Leadership Institute (SJILI). In March 2021, the Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) virtually launched its first cohort of 24 students to create student-centered dialogue around equity and inclusion on current and breaking issues of the day, nationally, locally, and statewide. The pandemic has unveiled inequities that have disproportionately derailed dreams, goals, and lives. Montgomery College is committed to providing a welcoming, sustaining, and safe environment for all students. We recognize that there are inherent inequalities in systems and, embraces intentional action to reduce those imbalances through focus, commitment, persistence, and public accountability.
