Who We Are

Building a national movement to broaden participation in STEM

NSF INCLUDES (Inclusion Across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science) is a comprehensive national initiative designed to enhance U.S. leadership in discoveries and innovations by focusing on diversity, inclusion and broadening participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at scale. NSF INCLUDES is one of the NSF 10 Big Ideas. The Big Ideas represent unique opportunities to position the United States at the cutting edge of global science and engineering leadership through pioneering research and enabling activities.

The NSF INCLUDES National Network brings together the power of many to strengthen STEM equity by connecting individuals, alliances, pilot programs, federal agencies, educational institutions, and other entities across the nation working to shift inequitable systems and broaden participation in STEM education and careers. Network members represent K-12, higher education, informal STEM education, and STEM careers and career advancement.

We believe we can build a powerful, sustainable movement that will accelerate the inclusion and advancement of traditionally underrepresented populations in STEM – including African Americans, Hispanics, Native Alaskans, Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, persons with disabilities, women and girls, and persons from economically-disadvantaged backgrounds. Join the NSF INCLUDES National Network to:

  • Learn about—and share—best practices in broadening participation with other leaders from education, science, industry, nonprofits, professional organizations, and government;
    Strengthen your capacity in areas such as building and maintaining collaborative infrastructure and equitable practices, strategy, measurement, communication, and program sustainability;
  • Build a national community of supportive peers singularly committed to catalyzing STEM education and career opportunities for underserved populations;
  • Prepare to apply for NSF funding to develop pilot programs or alliances that advance STEM equity

The vision of NSF INCLUDES is to catalyze the STEM enterprise to work collaboratively for inclusive change, resulting in a STEM workforce that reflects the population of the Nation. Read the NSF INCLUDES 2020 Report to the Nation.
